John Luckett
John Luckett was born in Humboldt, Tennessee, in 1951. He works predominantly in the medium of painting but amassed a body of work that includes photography, assemblage, and installation. After completing undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University, Luckett attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, before moving to Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles to pursue a career in art direction and design.
In 1997, Luckett began painting and was invited in 1999 to mount a solo showing of his first body of work at Friday the Thirteenth, a San Francisco gallery that primarily features outsider artists. Since then, he has had a number of solo and group exhibitions, and his work continues to exhibit a broad range of subject matter, using a variety of media.
His primitive and primarily self-taught exploration of texture, shape, and composition often finds form in intricate puzzles, using both harmonious and opposing color combinations to establish an energetic and complex landscape.
In his abstract, expressionist and primitive work, which represents the core of his practice, Luckett's bold use of color and organic shapes continues to create kinetic compositions that underscore his interest in geometry, biology and the natural world.
His work is included in both public and private art collections in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His graphic design work is included in the permanent library of the Smithsonian Institute.
Luckett currently lives and works in Palm Springs, California.
